"XP2 FaxSharing Solution" - WinFaxPro 10.04 FaxSharing [March 27, 2008]
i don't know if my solution is already posted before, but here's what i did.
i noticed that if the server and the client uses the same username and password, FaxSharing will work. What i did was i changed the "LogOnAs" property of the "WinFax PRO" service (Administrative Tools\Services) in the client computer to an account in with administrative priviledge. the host should also have that account, you can use any existing account as long as you have access rights to the host computer. after that, the host can log on to any account, no need to use the same account as the host. i hope this will for everyone.
btw, both my Host and Client computer is using WinXP SP2
"XP 2 solution" - Coop [July 20, 2007] Product Rating: 2/5
After updating WindowsXP to SP2, I installed the WinFax Pro 10.04 patch to continue allowing WinFax sharing on a peer-to-peer network. After following the directions from the Symantec support articles, I was still unable to get the host and clients to communicate. I could ping the host machine and knew I had the correct host computer name, but kept getting "access is denied. Check that this is the correct host name." Tried using the host computer's IP address instead of the computer name when configuring the WinFax client computer's "Fax Sharing Client Properties - Select Host," but to no avail.
What finally worked is I went back and followed the directions for manually "Reconfiguring Windows XP security settings" - http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/faxprod.nsf/docid/2004071911425704
I ignored the first three sections since I am using a different firewall than the Windows Firewall. Of course if you are using the Windows Firewall you would want to follow the instructions in the first three sections also.
"Winfax Sharing Solution?" - Mike [July 28, 2006] Product Rating: 3/5
I have been extremely frustrated (to say the least) by Symantec's obvious lack of support for WinFax.
I have tried every possible combination of fixes, as most of you have, and found the following:
I updated to ver 10.04.
I followed every step of symantec's Doc ID 2004071911425704 re:Fax Sharing client cannot connect to host after installing Windows XP SP2.
And what I believe to be the true solution on my network was simply to open port 1090 on the local subnet in Norton Antivirus' Internet Worm Protection (or Zone Alarm, or other firewall) on the host computer. Prior to doing this, I couldn't get past the RPC error messages, no matter how my network was configured.
I have not altered my original network configuration in any other way, other than to change that one port setting, and it has worked the way it should.
"WINFAX Network Faxing User Access with XP Pro" - CharlesB [July 19, 2006]
I have found solution for WINFax10 network user access issues. You do not need to create separate accounts or give admin rights to the users on the WINFAX Host PC.Just add the user under the Component Services,My Computer Properties described in the Symantec work around articles.I created a group and gave the group access under Com Security Access Permissions.Click the edit default Security add your group with remote access.Do the same for Launch and Activation Permissions and viola any user in your group can access the Host machine for faxing without full admin rights on the XP machine. You also need to follow this process on the client pc and give full rights to the C:\program files\winfax directory for access to the client software without admin rights
"HERE IS THE FIX!!! " - Russ Spears [June 30, 2006]
Maureen Gordon posted the fix, and it is so brilliant that it needs to be posted again. I worked for three days on this. Endless hours of listening to tech support hold music. Dell Support had know idea and had me reload my entire system THREE times. Symnatec is clueless. BUT MAUREEN GORDON...SHE ROCKS!!! Turns out that Outlook 2003 is looking for a data file from WINFAX so that it can present those faxed images through the outlook desktop. But WINFAX cannot pass that data so everything hangs at that point. Here is the fix to make Outlook 2003 run win WinFAX PRO. SEE BELOW.. ALL CREDIT GOES TO MAUREEN GORDON who posted this back int March. THANKS MAUREEN !!!! _____________________________________________________ "Winfax and Outlook 2003 problems" - Maureen Gordon [March 16, 2005] Product Rating: 5/5 Winfax was the best fax software on the market. I have read all your comments and complaints on this site and totally agree with ALL of them as I have had the same problems since Windows SP2. I have spent 15 hrs of my time trying to fix the problem. At last, I have sorted out the problem we were having.
All you need to do is to disable the Outlook Intergration. To do this, go into Outlook 2003, select TOOLS; OPTIONS; MAIL SETUP; DATAFILES, then you will see WINFAXLOGS on the list. Highlight and REMOVE this file. You can always import a phone book in WinFax Pro to send faxes instead of trying to use Outlook 2003 that doesn't work. You will then be able to use winfax and outlook together. If you download the 10.04 patch from Symantec, Outlook will still not work....tried it.
I have been looking for alternative fax software which can import an address book from a database, configure your own cover page with logo, schedule the fax to send at certain times and append several pages to the fax printer. There is none on the market other than Winfax...... so I still vote it 5/5. It is not their fault that Microsoft brought out SP2.
"Running WinFax Pro 10.03 and trying to use 2 soft modems" - Tim Sessa [March 14, 2006] Product Rating: 1/5
I'm running WinFax Pro 10.03 on three HP-Compaq DeskPro P4 systems with XP Pro SP2 and I have had no success running it with two soft (win) modems. I have tried USR 5660A and Zoom Hayes Accura V92 modems in various combinations (both USR, both Zoom, 1 USR & 1 Zoom). I have seen everything from TAPI errors to blue screen system crashes, if I run a single modem, everything runs fine, if I hook up an external hardware modem and run a single internal soft modem, everything runs fine. It appears that WinFax does not support 2 internal soft modems and of course, the documentation, knowledgebase and technical support were no help at all, a very disappointing experience.
"I GOT IT WORKING!!!" - Mark S. Grantom [February 14, 2006] Product Rating: 4/5
I can't tell you how many hours I have wasted since Windows XP SP2 crashed my Winfax host sharing setup. For some odd reason, I had given up months ago, after install the 10.04 "patch" and it still crashed and burned. I was relegated to using Winfax on a single workstation. Today, I needed to reinstall the workstation due to an unrelated software issue and I decided "one more time" to try to get the network sharing working. I installed the 10.03 disk and then patched it using the http://service.symantec.com/wfx1 patch file, bringig it up to 10.04. I made sure that all of the default security settings were in place per, the web site's instructions. I then created a new user account called Winfax (I had done this before I believe, but had since deleted it). Setup the host workstation. Went to the client and setup a new "Winfax" user with same pwd as the host. When I tried to connect I got the dreaded "RPC server not available". The solution? Check here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/faxprod.nsf/docid/2005091513580404?Open&src=&docid=2004071911425704&nsf=faxprod.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg= The damn WFXping.exe was firewalled out. I put it in my firewall exception list and Bam, it works! Now back in business with network faxing.

I would like to thank Maureen Gordon, who sent his comment on March 15, 2005 addressing the Winfax / Outlook problem. Maureen, thank you very much. This is very simple but excellent solution to the problem. I did not have even reboot computer and the Outlook started working like it supposed to, without freezing!!! I love Winfax, work with it since it was introduced. I like Outlook and wanted them working without "damaging" each other. Since I've got Office 2003 it became a problem. You helped me to fix it. After I did the procedure you recommended I tested Winfax and Outlook separately and simultaneously. No Outlook freezing anymore!!! Great!!! Maureen! In a 5-point system I give you 10! Guys from Microsoft/India and Symantec/India have to learn from guys like you how to fix the problem. The only thing they can do is pointing fingers on each other and read the troubleshooting manual, but after they cannot do anything with the problem they refer you to the Internet Provider???!!! What a great help!!! Thank you Maureen again!!! You released me from the week-long headache!
"Winfax Pro 10.04 & XP home - Don't like each other much!" - Anthony Staples [February 8, 2006]
I have had non-stop problems when installing Winfax pro on the XP home pc's in our office, there seems to be some sort of conflict with an other programme. Also when uninstalling and reinstalling, problems occure because it says that a version of winfax is already installed!! er no its not!!!!!!! lousy piece of software. Now that I have managed to install on the workstations that will be using the winfax programme, I have been struggling to network these stations within winfax, when saving the client details, no problems; when saving the host details, no problems; but trying the set up the host and the clients within each other big problems......... i'm now on the verge of saying "enough is enough" next step is to install the software in the bin!

There are certain steps: such as firewall enabled and access to winfax, and even I updated winfax 10.04 patch too. When I try to connect to the host i still get the message "WinFax Pro is unable to connect to the WinFax PRO Host station. Make sure an account has been created for you on the host station". But when I use other application or browse the host, its working fine. Some, PC are fine and some are with problem
"Winfax 10.03 and 10.04 Host connecting trouble with Win XP SP2" - Mario Emanuel [February 7, 2006]
THE SOLUTION perhaps !!!! I spend hours and hours to get Winfax Network Sharing to work on a Windows XP SP2 client. I tried every step and tip this forum, symantec support and other websites suggested. But it didn't work. The error "Make sure you created an useraccount on the host with the same name/password you used to log in to your client" was freaking me out :o(
And my last attempt was bulleye. What I did was: - Uninstall Winfax manually as discripted on the Symantec support pages. Even from within Win XP's Safe Mode. - Reinstall of Winfax 10.03 - Added an windows useraccount on the Host and Client with the same name and password. - Added an user account on the host with the same name and password I used to login my client pc. - And then very important: when Winfax launches the first time, Norton Firewall asks permission for Winfax accessing the network. Don't choose "Automatic Configuration" but "Allow on all ports".
And BINGO!! I believe it was Norton Firewall that prevented Winfax from functioning properly. Bye the way, In my config, Windows Firewall is disabled and I didn't install the Winfax 10.04 patch.

"WinFax Pro 10.03" - Greg [February 7, 2006]
I have this product working fine on my network as a network fax tool. Though I'm only using it between two machines, my other systems have no reason for fax access. Both systems are running Win XP Pro and it links up just fine.
However, I have a client with three Win XP Pro systems and WinFax Pro is not working as cleanly on this network as mine and I've not been able to identify why?? Same release version numers.
Still looking for solutions to client issues. Cannot connect to fax host problem.

"Winfax 10.xx onward" - Josh [July 1, 2005] Product Rating: 3/5
As many above, I too have been a winfax user since the delrina days. Although I am very unhappy with symantec for a wide range of problems I have symantec’s products, I put the blame for this current run of winfax problems firmly on Microsoft's shoulders. Running a fax server on stable (ex IBM) Win 2000 platform for years I can not say winfax 10.0 has given me on second of trouble. The trouble started with the addition of one XP station in the network, being ME based, XP home did not network well with windows 2000, but the biggest issue was winfax and XP. These do not work together and it would be incorrect to point the blame only on symantec for the XP specific problems. 10.02 and 10.03 work great on 2000 so why so bad on XP ? Same reason Java also does not work well on XP Microsoft jealousy code. They wish to introduce programs to compete with “standards” they need to offer a good enough alternative and ensure the “standard” is unstandard by making xenophobic code. Netscape lived through this, Borland’s Sidekick for windows, Java, once MS sets its sights on a new app, the old one is hated. Symantec’s screw up are many and very troubling, but let’s make sure some blame stays with others assisting in stealing all of our time. Abandoning Winfax seems the wise choice if MS is gunning for it with antibody code, why spend time and money promoting something or supporting it if you have very limited control over the OS it needs to run on ? Symantec could be professional about it and explain they want out and stop charging us for this program, or stop offering it so we stop buying it and suffering. Until then I will stick to my Windows 2000 running Winfax 10.0 and avoid the issues with XP.

I have installed Win4lin on my Linux Server with Win98SE on top. WinfaxPro 9.0 runs well on this. On my workstatioon I set up WinFax Pro as a client. This did not work, giving the well known 'rpc server .....'. I later found a message on the web advising that a registry entry should be deleted. I followed the advice and it worked..... for about three weeks. Now, on bootup I get a message saying the server cannt be found and giving its url. Yet I have no trouble pinging it! I'd love a clue.

"Winfax 10.04 installation" - Tom [June 20, 2005] Product Rating: 4/5
I now have 2 days into trying to get 10.04 installed in a 3 computer peer-to-peer XP pro SP2 network. One computer is a file server and also the Winfax host/faxserver, the other 2 computer are clients/workstations.
Winfax 10.02 was working perfectly with the SP2 fixes from Symantec until a few days ago when the RPC server error message started from out of no where. DHCP is in use froma Sonicwall firewall. I have been using Winfax for years very successfully and we have grown to love it in this small law office environment.
My 2 days of trying to get 10.04 installed included many phone calls, with no charge to Symantec;s paid support line. Unfortunately, Symantecs support calls go overseas - you know where - to people who have never experienced hands-on instllation/troubleshooting with Winfax. They are virtually useless. My next step, which one of the support people must have found on her checklist, was to set static IPs on each machine - that's today's work. No one has been able to tell me why the 10.04 instructions say to create another user account with admin privs that you don't have to log into to use Winfax - as there is no apparent connection between Winfax and this new user account - strange.
When Winfax works it is a great small business application that we depend upon. And, the price is right - cheap!
"Winfax 10.0" - Dobson [June 20, 2005]

"Fix for: "there is no RPC server available"" - Barry [May 9, 2005]
If you have a network that uses DHCP and your fax server is getting its IP from DHCP (a router or a server for example) then your clients will not be able to connect to the fax server and you'll get the "there is no RPC server available" error message.
The fix is to make the fax server have its own STATIC IP address. Assign it an IP under the range that was blocked/set aside for DHCP. For example, if your Linksys router serves up DHCP addresses starting at 192.168.1.100 up to .199 then make your fax server have the same IP settings as other computers on the network (check how the fax server is set for its IP settings by going to Start, Run, cmd <OK>, type: ipconfig <enter>) but then change the IP to 192.168.1.99
Then your clients will be able to either connect to the fax server/host by IP address or name and you'll never see the "there is no RPC server available" error message again!
Also, remember that Service Pack 2 causes the Winfax controller to break. You have to add it to the exceptions list in the Windows firewall.
I hate Winfax but have learned to live with it as I've tried other bad network fax software but there's nothing good that's cheap. True to the rest of life!
Good luck.
"WinFax Issues" - M. Edge [May 5, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
I have been using Winfax in a Windows environment since 1996 and have finally had enough of the product at the Version 10 stage. Won't recognize modems that actually work, insists upon linking itself to Outlook (yeah, that's a stroke of real genius)and causes sytem conflicts.
Wish I had a dollar for every time I have had system crashes and even outright reinstallation of systems because of the piece of overpriced junk. So from Win 95 to Windows 2000 Professional the Winfax is still garbage.
Oh, let us not forget the honorable mention for Norton Utilities, which has also declined to finally become a bug-ridden liability and it too has been tossed after years of similar nonsense.
In 1996 you might have been able to get away with overpriced junk that didn't work BUT the people wise up in the end...R.I.P. those Packard Bells, Compaqs, Hewlett Packards, NEC's and the price gouging with non-existent "customer service" (their words, not mine..!). When it then cost US$400 to add 8MB of RAM and AOL had their little money-maker charging by the minute...now they can't give their crap away. I guess you have to be patient and shop around....but be mostly patient :-)

I had to install Winfax 10.03 on a sales PC with XP SP1a at the firm. For a few days it worked really fine. But now I´ll receive TAPI-errors almost every day or sometimes a few times per day. Also it freezes many times, facsimiles are received but not printed although auto-print is activated. All documents from Symantecs knowledge base didn´t work. I upgraded the firmware of our ISDN-modem, installed current drivers, reinstalled Winfax. But NOTHING made Winfax 10.03 Pro work correct. This is the worst Winfax I ever used. But the only facsimile-software with many features at the price of $100.

I initially came by to get some information to send to a client, who recently argued with us stating that their IT dept installed WINFAX, which is a great program. Long and behold, it is a joke and as you can all see, what WINFAX succeeded in was good marketing, not good software
My advice to many of you's especially business clients, either stick to your old FAX machine or spend a little money, and get a real NET FAX or a better FAX SERVER software. Winfax is for kiddies, and I dont mean to insult you but truth is, what did you honestly expect from this program? The website still boasts that it was the best fax software in the 1990's. Times have change, demand has change. Its unfortunate that no one capitalizes on a better home based fax software, however I know Microsoft is working on one.
Good luck, but word to wise.. if you have Winfax, time to move on, save the tears for something worthwhile, if you looking to get Winfax, be aware, be very aware.

I'm also wondering if there is a good replacement for the Act/Winfax/Outlook combination for CRM?

This is the most damnable program I have ever seen. The damnable part is removing all the win fax files from the registry. Rabbits don't multiply as fast as winfax files migrate to the registry. I have removed and installed five times (about 12 hours). The Intel 537 dvf v92 modem works with everything xcept winfax pro 10.03. There are two error messages. 1. can't send date to the modem -please try powering; 2. a fatal exception has occurred at 0028:FF34E46A in VXD Intel C12(01) + 0002410A. One more trip around the rose bush and this program will be recycled into weekend garbage.
"Winfax woes" - Brian Mackie [May 5, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
Dear fellow sufferers...like many, I was in at Delrina's Winfax launch, and like many have been shocked by what Symantec has done (or, more importantly, not done) with a truly great original product. I've concluded that it's a lost cause for XP SP2 users and have switched to a $40 alternative from Black Ice. It's called Colorfax. Why anyone would want to design a color fax package is a mystery, but the key point is that it actually works in black and white! And yes, I have actually sent and received color faxes to a select group of people - and they look brilliant. OK, so Colorfax doesn't have all the Winfax bells and whistles, but since even basic Winfax functions tend not to work any more, that's irrelevant. It takes a little while to get your head round the different mindset of Black Ice's designers, but at least you can totally rely on receiving faxes (in straight TIF format!)and know that you can reliably send them, too. Black Ice also offers an over-engineered fax solution that is way too costly for most SMEs and other low-volume users and demands far too great a thought-change for us old Winfax users. Colorfax would be a worthy successor to Winfax if they emulated some of the older and better Delrina ideas - like a more advanced cover page designer, and a more comprehensive phone directory (this one has fields for only name, company and fax number) because I used the Winfax phonebook as a business database. To Junaid - Winfax gets stuck when answering a voice call - well, that's always been a problem, hanging your fax and involving a cold reboot in our case. And very, very annoying for the customers out there who, unaware that your program has hung, vainly try to send you a real fax. Take it from me: Winfax has cost my business an incalculable amount of money and credibility over the years, and because I can see no way of either suing them or getting Symantec to mend their ways, we've dumped Winfax because it is utterly useless. I recommend all but the most obsessive to do the same. Colorfax may not be as good as Winfax ought to be, but the people who wrote it have done a solid job. They're worth a try, and if you can live with a few shortcomings, you might also encourage them to improve the product and make it something even better than Winfax. Good luck to the obsessives. I hope your partners and family will eventually persuade you to get some sleep. In the meantime, I get eight hours a night.
"WinFax Won't Print from Windows and Hangs" - Jane K. [May 5, 2005] Product Rating: 2/5
After buying a new PC last summer with Office 2003 preinstalled, I installed WinFax 10.02. I can't print from Word to WinFax any more. (Can't print from Works either, so it's not just Word.) The print screen comes up and displays all pages of the document except the last one, and then hangs when I try to cancel out. As Tony reported below(4/7/05): "% of the time Winfax crashes part way through setting up a fax. You just can't restart Winfax because it says there's still something running and you can't have 2 instances of it. So I have to shut everything down and reboot the computer." Symantec tech support suggested a few things for uninstalling and reinstalling but they did not solve the problem. I have read that programs using VxD files have problems with Windows XP but don't have any more specifics, not sure if that is accurate. After reading all these comments I am discouraged about putting any more effort into WinFax, altho I have liked and used multiple customizable cover pages, attachments, and the ability to receive a fax without printing it (which my multifunction printer will not do). At this point I am using WinFax only to receive, not to send. Interesting, the comment that Symantec had bought a good program and ruined it. I am turned off by the "bloat" of their programs in general, and am also thinking of moving away from Symantec entirely. It's a shame, feeling I need to abandon programs that used to be great.
"Cannot connect to the host, possible reason: there is no RPC server available" - webfly [May 5, 2005]
I have following scenario:
Win2k Server based network with 8 PC clients connected through hub. A DSL modem for internet, Linksys router for internet sharing.
Client PCs have Winxp pro and win2k pro installed. Each pc is a member of a domain, but usually users don’t logon to domain. They simply logon to local pc. Each PC can view each other in network in Network neighborhood/My Network Places. Each PC can access shared folders on server – that is on win2k directory environment. Each pc can ping each other. Networked accounting program “Peach Tree” is working fine (db server side) on PCs. Networked Printer is working fine.
Now my problem is:
WinFax Pro 10.03 is installed on one networked PC (not server) working fine on local machine using its local modem. I configured this PC serving as host for WinFax (as instructed in Symantec’s WinFax documentation). I installed WinFax on other PCs and tried to configure as client, none of them is connecting to the host machine. Its returns the error:
“Cannot connect to the host, possible reason: there is no RPC server available.”
I found this document at Symantec for the related issue ref: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/faxprod.nsf/docid/2004071911425704?Open&src=w
And tried exactly step by step, but no use, nothing happened, no progress, wasted 3-days.
I verified services - Remote Procedure Call (RPC), its up and running = no result I uninstalled Winxp’s Service Pack 2 completely from the host, and tried = no result. I even re-installed winfax on different PCs on win2k & tried to connect = no result. I updated WinFax patch to version 10.04 = no result.
The reason why I took it as challenge, because someone says, it was working before.
I tried all possible troubleshooting so far but nothing happened, no success at all, still same stupid error on client. Huh! Finally, I installed another 3rd party Fax-Server program, and its perfectly working fine. I am damn sure now the cause is “WinFax” program itself, not the environment. Although I’ve already suggested changing the fax-server software, but there’s headache of importing a huge address book from WinFax.
I feel bad of being surrender of the issue. Any help will be great & I will be thankful.

After installing the host and then 6 clients on a busy medical office network, the host faxed ok but NONE of the clients could connect to the host. I un-installed and re-installed the clients many times, spent hours on this. Nothing in the manual about this. You have to read a pdf file on the cd about clients. I followed it to the letter. What a nightmare. Nothing worked. Symantec wants $29.95 a minute to talk about this. I have been using symantec products for years, but after this frustrating experience, I've had it, and un-installing Winfax and returning for a refund. Then, I am un-installing all the other Symantec products as well and saying goodby to Symantec forever. I am talking about over 50 machines that I watch over will be changed.

"Win Fax 10.02 & Win Fax 10.03 Compatability Issues...The Only Thing You Can Really Count On From Symantec Products" - Bob [May 2, 2005]
Boy you can really judge a company by how they treat their customers. I administer a Network which has WinFax 10.02 on the server as well as 10 of the 11 workstations in the network. We added a new XP machine to the network and were forced to buy WinFax Pro 10.03 because I could find no 10.02 versions. Having dealt with Symantec in the past I KNEW that this version conflict would be a nightmare in no time. Sure enough, it was. The WinFax Sharing part of the two versions were not compatable. I called Syamntec Support and spoke with two men who had very Western sounding names (Mike and Dave) but had such heavy accents that I understood roughly every fifth word. From what I could decypher, Win Fax Pro does NOT support the Win Fax Sharing aspect of Win Fax Pro. Take another million out of petty cash 'Symantec Executives.' If you're reading this article do what I'm going to do in the future...STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM SYMANTEC PRODUCTS As YOU CAN.
"Wifax Pro V10.2" - Safari [April 11, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
Having heard of all the problems with XP Pro with SP2 & Winfax, I was reluctant to purchase the software, so I borrowed a copy from a friend, to test.
Installation goes well until such time as it comes to inserting personal details like my fax number. XP vanishes and the need to reinstall becomes very apparent!!
Needless to say, I have returned the package to him.
"Winfax Pro 10.0" - Lou Bowman [April 11, 2005]
Have succesfully installed it on two computers with XP and SP2, and it works fine. Have always loved Winfax UNTIL NOW. Have one new computer with xp and sp2 and it just won't work. It's like impossible to get it to work. The strange thing is it works 100% on one computer and the other computer is exactly the same "out of the box" and it won't work. 10 hours of frustration between microsoft help, Symantec help and conflicts with Norton antivirus and I give up. The problem is, I depend upon it heavily for my business and have many templates programmed in that are now useless. Symantec seems to have joined the legions who now sell and re-sell the same product as upgrades rather than "fix" the problem. Forget the old world of buying software, now you just rent.

"Replacement for WinFax Pro" - Rick Ford [April 11, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
Looking at the list of nightmares with Winfax I started looking for a replacement since Symantic hasn't done anythng to fix it. So what did I find? Well I didn't want to spend too much because I use eFax for incoming (best solution for my work) and my out going is not that much. So after looking at many programs the one I am about 90 percent sure I'll buy (still have some time on the trial)is Snappy Fax. Now the name is nothing to write home about, but the program is pretty darn good.
So for those of you who are looking for a replacement for WinFax Pro, give this one a try.
Good luck.

"Winfax 10 not worth struggle to try and fax" - Tony [April 7, 2005]
Another familiar lament. I've been using Delrina/Symantec's Winfax for 8-9 years, dutifully upgrading with each release. The trade-off with v.10 is the ability to send decent images, but the tradeoff is stability. 80% of the time Winfax crashes part way through setting up a fax. You just can't restart Winfax because it says there's still something running and you can't have 2 instances of it. So I have to shut everything down and reboot the computer. Last night, i gave up after 1/2 hour trying to send 2 pages. I am giving MightFax a try. It's has customizable cover pages (on widely advertised), but doesn't have a company name field in the phone book. A very small price to pay for stability and IT WORKS! I'd like to hear about other alterantive faxing software (not 3rd party services though).
"RE: "Winfax 10.02 & SP2" - SB [January 7, 2005] Product Rating: 2/5" - Luke [March 30, 2005]
I have this exact same problem TO THE LETTER.
I had alot of troube setting it up on the network, finally worked fine, then SP2 released ARRHH! Get it fixed using the manual roll-back. Works great for six months host and clients prefectly in tune.
Yesterday I installed Nortons Anti Virus 2005 and now I'm back to square one: can receive faxes but clients cant connect to controller to recieve from the host. Half the time the host is unattended and it is unacceptable for our business to not action faxes straight away. Thats why we went to Winfax in the first place.
The worst bit is that Symantec sends me an email, that the guy said "will defintely" fix it. I get the email and its the same manual rollback steps that I had found and done myself months earlier!
Please SB if you do fix this problem post it here! HELP! I even tried to disable the WORM PROTECTION and that didnt work.
"WinFax 10.03, Outlook 2003, Symantec" - Rip McManus [March 29, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
Had some problems with 10.0 on XP SP2 with Outlook 2003 and upgraded to 10.02. After the upgrade, OL 2003 crashed constantly instead of just occasionally. Updated to 10.03, no change. I also can't print to the WinFax driver unless the controller is started and couldn't implement Symantec's recommended fix because it says nothing about what to do when multiple mapicfg files exist.
Symantec has become brain-dead over the last several years. Norton A-V is mediocre. Systemworks is worthless. This is a company that is apparently run by accountants instead of the PC enthusiasts that ran it when the Symantec product line was one of the best in the industry.
As far as support goes, $29.95 is too much to pay to get help for a product that clearly isn't designed to use mainstream Microsoft products, particularly when there are known issues and they've made no attempt to warn prospective buyers. I don't care how good the tech support staff is. It is Symantec's obligation to keep up with industry standard APIs. I shouldn't have to call them at all, and if I have a problem that is clearly product-related, I shouldn't be faced with the prospect of paying for support.
Wish I could give this product a zero, but 1 is as low as it goes.
"Winfax Pro & Windows XP" - Art [March 25, 2005] Product Rating: 3/5
I have been using Winfax Pro for a couple years now and it does work pretty good. I use a Server 2000 host along with an Windows XP Pro workstation. No problems at all. I even upgraded to Office 2003 without any problems. I must be one of the few lucky ones out there. The only problem I have with Winfax Pro 10.03 is that you cannot use a network printer, that pretty bad.
"Winfax 10.02 and earlier" - Brian Mackie [March 22, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
What a litany of disasters! Symantec should be sued out of existence. God alone knows the true global cost of this negligence. My 10.02 plays all sorts of games with the modem, does not reliably auto-answer (and hangs), the email function fails with "email login failure" - inexplicable - and some of my clients are extremely annoyed at not being able to get through. I gave up their customer support years and years ago as a joke in very poor taste. Someone, somewhere, is going to make a fortune by developing a fax program that actually works.

"Winfax and Outlook 2003 problems" - Maureen Gordon [March 16, 2005] Product Rating: 5/5
Winfax was the best fax software on the market.

1 change I made which helped Go to tools /program setup / Dialing & location/ Advanced/ & change from WinFax pro Dialing To Windows Dialing. It made a hugh difference to the number of times the program hung & solved all modem problems. In WinXp you need to be logged on as an Administrator to see the advanced tab. But I am having another problem sense I installed SP2 I simply can't get the back up to work I allways get the same message. The program goes thru the motions of doing the backup then I get this message " backup completed unsucessfullydo you want to view the log " then when I scroll down the Log I finally come to this message C:\Program Files\Symantec\WinFax\Data\1176000.fxs The system cannot find the file specified. <<FAILURE>> ** Did not commit changes to the above store ** Thanks in advance for any help Regards David

"WinFax & Symantec" - Carol Barrett [March 3, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
What a joke! After numerous hours of contacting Symantex about problems what a waste of time and energy, all they say is uninstall SP2. But as we all know it keeps coming back. We are constantly resetting computer to get incoming and outgoing faxes to go through. They have not sent in a patch to microsoft, therefore it will not work with service pack 2. Product rating should be a zero.
"Winfax 10.00/02/03 - not for today's systems." - Tom Brady [March 3, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
I am in the UK, Running XP SP2 & Office 2003. Loaded Winfax 10 (previously used successfully on MS 2000) okay and got updates for live advisor and programme. All was fine until I opened Outlook 2003. Hung immediately, total incompatibility, only cold boot fixes. Symantec Tech via email said I should upgrade to 10.03 on their website. Download cost for upgrade was $50! Don't think I'll bother. Have had Symantec/MS compatibility problems in the past and Winfax is now the last programme of theirs I run. Not any more... Need a good fax programme with Outlook 2003 integration. any suggestions, folks?
"WinFax Pro v10.03" - Lou Leggett [March 3, 2005]
WFX Pro v10.02 was causing MS Outlook 2003 to hang. After many uninstall/reinstalls of WFP V10.02 using Add/Remove that function finally failed, partially uninstalling but never showing up again in the Add/Remove Programs. Symantec Tech Support (India) has tried every way possible, thus far without success, to uninstall the prior version. Symantec shipped us (free) their new v10.03 they say will work with MS OL2003, but we cannot install it due to the prior (old) version. Seems to me since the Install program finds the old version every time, it should tell me where it is so I can uninstall it. Frustrating is an understatement. Is there a competittive product out there?

"WinFax 10.02 up and running, sometimes" - roy [March 1, 2005] Product Rating: 2/5
WinFax 10.01 is a quirky beast, and the support is abysmal. I installed it on a Windows 2000 Pro box, chose all options (MS Office integration, etc.), and the WinFax doc template crashes MS Word. Uninstalled WinFax. Reinstalled w/out MS Office integration, now works better. Had to get a piece of hardware to handle distinctive ring, as WinFax would sometimes answer non-fax calls. I set WinFax to start at boot time, but it won't receive faxes until I login. I turned ON the WinFax automatic receive, but it comes up ready to receive only 70% of the time. It must be hard to write quality FAX software AND support it because, from what I've read here, no product does both.

"Winfax Pro 10 no longer works on my XP Service Pack (2) computers" - R. Nathan Brin [January 10, 2005] Product Rating: 1/5
In September 2004 I had a problem with a Symantec product. Microsoft in India ($35.00) called Symantec in India. I was on the phone for ten (10) full hours with Microsoft and two hours on hold during that time with the Symantec Indian who finally picked up the phone and wasted yet another hour of my time. My winfax also will not work now. I now phone the technical service dept. of all vendors that I do business with. If I have a choice I go with the American Tech staffs such as the guys at Visioneer Scanners in California. Most of the Indians guys ar very polite and seemingly VERY DUMB!!! I guess the smart ones are all here in the U.S. I have some interest in possibly initiating a class action law suit against Symantec based upon their lack of good faith by continually failing and refusing to provide appropriate patches and fixes to their software. The answer to this situation is to refuse to spend ANY money on upgrades. Choose a NEW vendor. I just downloaded a trial version of ColorFax Lite. It worked on one of my computers only, but it seems to get around the problems Symantec/Winfax has so assiduously ignored.
"Winfax 10.02 & SP2" - SB [January 7, 2005] Product Rating: 2/5
Wow, interesting to read all of this similar comments to my experiences. So here is my story. I hooked up a business between 4 computers to share Winfax. Then it was 10.0 or so, but eventually I put 10.02 at some point. Life was great and the host and clients seem to connect and faxes went as planned. Then one day, SP2 came along. Strangely enough, Winfax worked when I followed the steps that Symantec has on their website. Here is the bad part.. they say, we need to update Norton Antivirus. I say.. go for it, download 2005 from their renew website and buy it and install. So they do it, and at it seemed that nobody could connect to the Host anymore. So, now what... I try everything, yes I am an engineer also, but to no success. I get on the phone with tech, but was on hold as I did not get a priority number.. so after 30 minutes a roll off the phone, get a tech support PRIORITY ID mind you, and then wait another hour on the phone with nobody answering.
So I tell the client, you must use this priority id and call this number and talk to them. So she waits 3 HOURS on hold and the guy uninstalled SP2 and did not get anywhere. So she emailed tech support, and they sent her an email back which finally said... Norton's new WORM PROTECTOR needs to be turned off. Once I did that it worked fine. So now the client has SP1 and everyone else SP2 but they can all connect.
So, since I had SP2 working with winfax before... BEFORE they put Norton AntiVirus 2005 in, I figured, well lets put SP2 back in on the host machine. Bad choice. Now nobody can connect again, and I have tried everything. I thought 10.03 might fix it, but reading here it does not seem so. So.. now I will either try a few things more and see if I can get SP2 to work, (I have spent hours already), or I will simply uninstall SP2 on the host, or I will do what one guy above said, (no not throw the software out the door yet), but to uninstall winfax and reinstall it in SP2 so hopefully it "catches", OR I will find another product.
As for tech support, .. well, like most companies now, us Americans will not work for cheap, so it is overseas. He claimed to be an expert, but FAILED to do one thing, which fixed it at least until reinstalling SP2, and that was to turn off the WORM protector in Norton 2005 AntiVirus. In addition, he said he would call back after researching the problem.. and he never did.
One more though, Microsoft is going to be offering Virus software now, so all these others better look out. Why do you think MS dropped McAfee? If only Winfax worked better with SP2, we would all be better off. Until then, my client is unhappy not being able to put in SP2 and use Winfax. So, I need to go deal with that now. Be warned, it may not work with SP2 and Norton Antivirus 2005. Symantec.. Patch? Online Help psted on the site might help more! And why does your site have Winfax 10.0 up when 10.03 is out?? Tell it like it is for us installers!! Do we not drive to take away your business if we cannot recommend it?
Regards..... Computer builder and Configuration specialist.
"WINFAX PRO 10.03 NOT= XP SP2" - Anonymous [January 5, 2005]
This program is such a waste of time it does not work at all with Windows XP SP2 even with the newest updates Everything was working with 10.02 and SP1 and after updating to SP2 and the newest Winfax 10.03 it can't even receive faxes reliably.
"WinFax Pro problems" - Jeff Hendrick [January 4, 2005] Product Rating: 4/5
The most important thing with WinFax Pro 10.0, seems to be the exact order in which it is loaded onto Windows XP Sp2. I have finally successfully loaded WinFax Pro 10.02 and Microsoft Outlook 2003 on a laptop with WIN XP Pro Sp2 - with each program linking to the other without incident.
I have encountered numerous problems with Symantec WinFax Pro 10.02 and the most recent version 10.03, and have noticed the following: - WinFax Pro 10.02 will uninstall through the WIN XP Pro control pannel, BUT version 10.03 will not. The only way (I have found) to fully uninstall 10.03 was to go to Symantec's website and get the instructions to manually uninstall. - I eliminated some of the WinFAX and Outlook 2003 conflict by: 1) Upgrading from Outlook 2002 (Office XP) to Outlook 2003. With WinFax 10.02 installed, the program works well & uses the Outlook 2002 contacts (for business fax numbers). - Previous attempts to upgrade to Outlook 2003 from 2002 seemed to get "hung-up" when Outlook 2003 opened up and tried to load the Winfax folder link. - Knowing this, I removed the Outlook 2002 folder link prior to upgrading to Outlook 2003 (Complete installation), so there would be no conflict. - The result was/is what appears to be a successful installationand cooperation between programs. - Anyone wanting more details can send me an email to jhendrick@steelstrategies.com - Hope this also works for others

I, too, have read these complaints much too late. I have spent at least 32 hours of "non-billable" time just trying to get a client BACK TO WHERE THEY WERE before Microsoft SP2 and a trial installation of ACT! 2005. At least the Microsoft SP2 explains why the problem propagated to the other 2 PC's when I never even installed the software there!

I have this program running on XP SP1 and the only issue I'm having is that the Print Properties will not let me select the printer paper source. Regardless of tray selected (upper, lower, or manual), it will only print faxes to the Upper Tray. Tried several printers with same result. As said elsewhare in these postings, tech support is a joke.

Well, I haven't had nearly the amount trouble as most of the comments. Lately Winfax is hanging my computer on shutdown and the only way to get it to shutdown is to close Winfax off. Also a couple of days ago I sent a fax, realising it only attached one page out of the two. Symantec shouldn't be selling the product if it's out of date. This indeed is fraud and as for their Anti-Virus...keep away. Clashes with programs and other issues aren't worth the trouble.
"Winfax and Act 2005" - Michael K [December 14, 2004] Product Rating: 4/5
I was just about to upgrade to Act 2005 from 2004. What i just realized is that they no longer intergrate with Winfax, and have eliminated dialer! They have an add-on company offering software to integrate with Winfax for $79! Tricky. Act now has a note that they are bringing Dialer back in January. They claim the rewrite of the entire Act software forced them to drop it. I will not upgrade and will probably return it at this point until I find an alternative to Winfax.
After 2 days of install and reinstall of Winfax on XP1 back in June, I was finally able to get it to work. I used a lot of WInfax Knowledge base Q&A. But I ended up finding 10.0 not 10.2 to work the best. The only trouble I have now periodically is a haging incoming fax once a week. But I love Winfax so much I will deal with it. A solution needs to be found for faxing that intergrates well.
"Winfax Pro 10.02 and Outlook 2003 - disaster " - Rod Pierson [December 7, 2004]
Like everyone else I have spent hours first trying to figure out why my Win XP machine hangs up trying to close, one user works fine the other hangs. I have reformated and installed Win Fax Pro last and that seems to be a big mistake, MS Win XP offers a fax utility on the CD. Now I am debating to spend another day reformating and re-installing the software to obtain the use of Win Fax Pro. It was a great program for years, My first FBI clue should have been when Symantec wanted money to upgrade to 10.02 XP. For those of you who have the time, try to reinstall first according to one of the posters. Is this program really worth the trouble, I found a great little program for less... Impact Color Fax for less than $40.00. with more features than Win Fax Pro. I have used Win Fax Pro for years, and have never had problems till I upgraded to XP S2. My best recommendation is to stay away from this program unless you want something to occupy your time. At this time I am throwing the disk in the trash............and will never buy another Symantec program... you can always download free anti virus programs and free firewall progams on the net that put alot less bloat in your computer........ try AVG and Zone Alarm.... if Symantec is not going to support us, then I will refer others. Good luck.....
"WinFax 10., 10.2 10.3" - Gary Luis [December 6, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
As stated from all here, the program is garbage. I've spent many hours on the phone with Symantec with mixed results. first I had 10.0, then kicked it up to 10.1 for server issues, then kicked all up to 10.2 for XP issues, then kicked it up again to 10.3 for more XP-SP2 issues. now I kick myself for this waste of time. the first issue was to stop the service on the server, then stop it on the problem client. Start the service on the server then start the service on the client. Other times, I had to reinstall (Manually more than once). Many times I'd find that the winfax service is disabled. When starting it or setting it to Auto, it works then crashes. I started with Winfax when it was version 7 and with Delrina. The product was great. Time to look for something new. Sad part is Symantec will tell you on the phone that the program is crap and they don't support it.

Installed Winfax Pro 10.02 on XP with service pack2. Installation is OK until you reach the stage where you got to enter CSID and the installation program crashed without any error message. I had to uninstall winfax manually and reinstall again skipping CSID entry and got it installed and running somehow. But the software was far from stable, message manager crashed while editing some options. The program freezes the modem and doesn't send or receive faxes all of a sudden! Got big headaches with this product and support is horrible. Symantec suggested upgrading to winfax 10.03 to solve XP compatibility issues.

Installed and received faxes alright but during install it couldn't install the winfax printers so I couldn't send any faxes. ARG!!!! Glad I got this off of file sharing and right into my Norton Recycle Bin! (JUNK)
"WinFAX Pro Compatibility with ACT! 2005" - Jack Peters [November 12, 2004]

"Winfax hangs two modems" - Robert Crismond [November 12, 2004] Product Rating: 2/5
I've been running Winfax for about three weeks on a XP Pro and I am having two issues that have been mentioned by others. 1.) The modems will hang and under task manager, they are listed as Not Responding. 2.) I get a pop-up Fax/Modem Alert from the second modem(occassionally), that a user must click OK on. If caught as it occurs, the fax might be received, otherwise it goes to bit heaven. Still looking for a resolution and holding on Symantec Support.
"Simply put: HORRIBLE" - Marc Renner [November 8, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
I have a 4 year degree in computer science. I have been a network administrator for over 12 years. This is shameful, but I have worked on trying to get WinFax Pro 10.02 working between 2 XP pr sp2 machines for 2 days. What a complete waste of time. A complete embarrasment. Symantec should be ashamed at their pitiful lack of information available on their "support" site. It's obvious that it is simply a front for their "pay to play" support business.
Do not buy this product if you know whats good for you..
"After 7 years of WINFAXING . . SYMANTEC & WINFAX 10.xx are history with me" - Kerry Clark [November 2, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
I have had nothing but limp along nightmares with WINFAX over the years. The final straw was when my WINFAX system backups could not be WINFAX restored. The restore function refuses to import my backups and generates error after error. I've lost years of vendor supplier pricing info and are ready to cry. I hate symantec will never purchase another product from them if I can help it.
"WinFax Pro?" - Guy Reynolds [November 2, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
Having been advised to buy winfax (25 licences) as the approved network fax product for the ERP system we are installing, I have got as far as opening the box, reading the manuals and extracting the daxshring manual off the disk. I am now going to see if Symantic hold to to their 60day money back gaurantee. If you can find it burried in their knowledge base Syamantic state they don't support winfax on any MS Server platform, nor do they support it on networks running DHCP, nor if there is a solitary 1 or 0 in the IP address. Given that the planned install falls foul of all of these, I am not prepared to pay for licences for an unsupported product. I'm off to look at Zetafax, or even resort to Hylafax running on a Linux server.
"Winfax 10 won't let me install!" - Merritt A. Vincent [November 2, 2004]
I tried to uninstall Winfax Pro 10.0 due to a power glitch during my install. Now the program will not let me reinstall because it says that I have a previous version already on my machine. I DON'T! Believe me, I have tried manually uninstalling every part and piece of Winfax but to no avail! Does anyone here have a solution? Thanks!

The Symantec fix procedure reverses some of the SP2 changes by unblocking some of the blocked functions. For some types of computer attacks, the procedure increases your computer's vulnerability to pre-SP2 levels.

We have installed Winfax 10.03..and do not have too many problems. However, we do get an occasional blurred image when printing...not sure why. (Print preview looks fine.) Has ANYONE found a decent REPLACEMENT for Winfax ? I'm addicted to its integration with ACT, ability to file/manage faxes, annotate, etc. I don't want a "simple" cheapy fax program. I'm a standalone user. ANY ONE FOUND ANYTHING? Email: jefflink@adelphia.net
"Fax Software" - patrick mcmahon [September 30, 2004]
All this about winfax. there are other softwares out there. if it is just you and a single computer like said by one person earlier "home office" Windows XP aka "Microsoft" has built in fax software to receive and send faxes. IT WORKS GREAT all you got to do is learn a bit of a different setup.
"Winfax... simply put, AWFUL" - Ben [September 29, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
Winfax sucks. I hate it. I have spent countless hours messing with it. I just got done blowing away it's database and rebuilding it in fact. But what do you expect from a product that hasn't changed or had a major version revision in years?? I have had great success with some of Symantec's other products, like Norton Antivirus Corporate (and all home versions), but Winfax is just awful. I think they purchased it, put their name on it, and have decided not to improve upon it or fix it.
Thanks to this site though, I think I have a good starting point at looking for a replacement. Too bad one of our vendors software products only supports Winfax... that's fine though, I'll just put up a seperate server running the new fax software (whatever that ends up being) and leave Winfax alone.

I've been using WINFAX 10.02 to fax to a local number. This time I have to use my calling card to transmit to a long distance number. After all the necessary setup, WINFAX keeps on dialing the long distance number!!
I went to SYMANTEC.COM for some help. The knowledge base indicated that only Phonebook entries can be used with calling cards. So I tried adding a new phone book entry. When I click on the number, the WINFAX Controller suddenly terminates!! The same thing is true with other features.

We had no choice but to upgrade to 10.0 during our upgrade to Lawson enterprise software 8.03, which uses Winfax Pro as its fax integrator. Have had nothing but problems, and everytime it is something new. Am running on Windows 2000 with US Robotics modem. As soon as one problem is solved, seems 10 more that pop up right behind it. Lawson needs to reconsider its partnership with Symantec. I hate this product, don't even thing about paying for it! I can't tell you how many hours I've wasted screwing around with it, and I do know what I'm doing.
"Things WinFax Pro can't do..." - emdee [September 22, 2004] Product Rating: 3/5
WinFax Pro 10.x comes with the network part of the software as standard. So you can set up HOST and CLIENT systems. But, this area is still undeveloped, searching on Symantec's website you find:
"NOTE: Networked Printers are not supported as Print On Receive printers under Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP."
So, if you wan't to print your faxes as they are received, you better make sure you have a printer directly connected to the HOST.
Can we trick WinFAX into thinking a networked printer is directly connected?
And also, this pearler:
"Symantec does not offer support for fax sharing when you run it on computers that use a dynamic IP address or whose IP address contains solitary zeroes and ones in the octets. For instance, the IP address 192.168.0.1 has a solitary zero in the third octet and a solitary one in the fourth octet."
This appears a ridiculous statement, since using an addressing scheme like this is completely standard for internal networks. What exactly happens and why if you use this layout is unclear.

I have Winfax on 15 computers and none of them have problems. I do get some small problems like the winfax not sorting the ACT lookup by name no matter how you try to sort and phonebook corruption or some corruption ever so often but it is easily fixed with the tools included. All in all the software has no problems.

"Winfax 10.02 Email Nightmare" - Edward A. Sunada [August 23, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
I started using Winfax from V8 & upgraded with MS OS changes & Winfax upgrades. For the most part, I have wasted hundreds of hours reinstalling Winfax trying to get the email part of the program to work properly. It fails the login even though there is no need for the program to login & even with the proper login info entered (which I never had to do before 10.00), I still get an error message "Email login failed". If you don't need Winfax, buy a fax machine...it'll be a lot cheaper in the long run. I will probably purchase a fax machine within the next month just because I am tired of Symantec's lack of attention to the problems Winfax produces like not being able to uninstall the program unless you do it manually, Winfax not finding the modem or not working even though XP indicates the modem is installed & working among many others.

1. Problem: winword will no longer run. 2. Tried Symantec fixes. They did not work but did cause other problems. 3. Reformatted hard drive and tried to install winfax. 4. "Install Haltd" found earlier version, removed and rebooted. Error message returns again and again. Each time searched for any traces of winword but there were none. I expected much better from Smantec. From reading of others problems this was a blessing in disguise. I'll find some other more reputable software that can be installed in less than 3 days.

Definitely not worth the money or the hours upon hours of tweaking and installing / uninstalling. This is not to mention waiting and waiting for Customer Service (hahaha) / Tech Support. "WINfax 10.02 and XP" - Clare Snyder [July 21, 2004]
I would not go as far as to say Winfax is useless on XP (or 98) but give yourself a brushcut before you start or you WILL tear your hair out. If using Office or Word you MUST use the custom install and do NOT allow it to install the macros. It is the MACROS that kill Word. The main problem WE have with the product (networked) is although the fax gets sent OK, and is logged as sent on the server, the workstation is told it did not send. Online support is a hoax, and telephone support is an outright FRAUD. You pay for the support call, get tech who cannot speak the english and knows less than my 17 year old cat about the program or the problem. After spending HOURS on the phone with no resolution they refuse to refund the payment, stating they do NOT guarantee they can solve the problem.
A quick call to my credit card company solved THAT problem !!

We are a systems integrator and reseller who has sold and supported Winfax Pro for years, but will no longer do so unless the Symantec Winfax development group addresses the many incompatibility issues with Winfax Pro 10.03 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. We've attempted to find out the development status of Winfax Pro from Symantec and no one seems to know anything. It appears to us that this product may be at an End Of Life stage. Keep this in mind, if it don't work with Office Outlook 2003, how will it not work with XP Service Pack 2.
"WInfax Pro 10 and Office 2003" - Robert [July 16, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
Do not, repeat, DO NOT buy this package if you use Office 2003. Installed it and Outlook crashed. Spent 4 days installing/uninstalling Office 2003 and Winfax and tweaking settings. one program or the other will work, depending upon the order of installation, but not both. After uninstalling and spending a great deal of time manually removing registry entries (Unistatll ...doesn't) , Outlook works again.

First comment - "What a bloddy nightmare!"
It took me 4 & a half hrs to delete Winfax Pro8 off my computer.
I would seriously advise anyone against buying, downloading or installing this because it causes no end of problems, from adding things to your email/word/excell program drop-down menus, and causes no-end of entries in your system registry.
Anyone that is having trouble removing thisprogram (think it works for any version) should try this link: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/faxprod.nsf/d39f78119f7fc9e68825666b0051a11a/5a2dd2b7c5589aa7882566a400746fa4?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam & go through all the various steps, or visit www.symantec.com & search for "winfax uninstall".

My client has Winfax pro 10.03 / WinXPhome5.1-sp1 / Office97(8.02) combination. They have that PC set to receive faxes automatically, because they are receiving lot of junk faxes too and don't want to waste ink for it. Now, problem is, WinFax pro cuts off every 5-10 days or so. If this happens Friday after 5:15pm it means that all incoming faxes will be print with another faxmachine using ink. Reason why they bought Winfax pro was to save ink and get rid of junk easier. Now with this problem on winfax they are calling me day and night. They can get it working again by rebooting, but it not proper solution. I found this url, which explains why it may happen:
http://www.mcse.ms/message583875.html
Have anyone else experienced the same? Are there competitive alternatives for winfax pro? This is waste of time, money and effort.

Had major difficulty with upgrading from 10.02 to 10.03 until I discovered that the "Windows 2000" server I was using as a host had a bad fax received, and caused errors in XP versions... after installing windows 2000 on one of the clients, my XP machine runs 10.03 very smoothly...

I had to reinstall windows me. I had win fax pro before and in attempting to re-install I received a prompt telling me there were 2 missing files, unidrv.hlp and lconlib.dll which I'm not sure have been downloaded. Then there is a window telling me there is an earlier version of win fax and I need to uninstall it. I go to the uninstall feature and can not find symantec win fax program to uninstall and it won't let me re-install win fax pro 10., which I purchased in July of 2002. Please advise.
"Winfax 10.03 and Outlook XP" - Doug [April 28, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
Garbage. I have been a Winfax user since version 6,0. 10.x is crap. I have now purchased 10.0, and then I had to purchase an upgrade to 10,0 (no free upgrade path) in an effort to get it to work with my XP machine, and now, I have tried 10.03. None of them work at all -- they all crash outlook, 10.03 doesn't not unistall unless you do it manually.
Thanks symantec, for buying and then ruining another great product. For what it's worth, I have now stopped using Symantec's systemworks, utilities, and firewall products, in favor of those sold by competitors. Once my AV subsription lapses, I'm done with symantec forever. Good riddence,

"WinFax Pro 10.01 or is it 10.02" - Sybille Schaufler [April 12, 2004] Product Rating: 1/5
GARBAGE!!!!! DON't TRY to introduce it into a Windows XP / Office 2003, non-U.S. Robotics environment, not even WITHOUT Outlook 2003 integration. It can't even make up its own mind. We bought it as V. 10.01. 2 of our 4 computers list it as V. 10.01 (2000.09.29) in Help, About... The program has become inaccessible once again on the 4th and newest machine. But an on-line automated support session on the Symantec site produced the info that the installed version on this machine is V. 10.02.
Although the 4 computers are networked, each has its own fax/voice modem thus we haven't installed network faxing. Three of the machines run under Windows XP Home edition, the notebook under Windows ME. The program works reasonably well on the 3+ year old Dell WinXP, with Office XP and U.S. Robotics 56K Voice PCI, except that the 'Photo Quality' printer, set to 'fine' produces black globs instead of grayscale graphics, after a fax has been transmitted. On this machine it is integrated with Office XP. It also works reasonably well, even does an excellent job printing my transmitted cover sheet, complete with a sharp clear image of our logo (jpg file), when printed to the same network printer = HP LaserJet 5. On the notebook it is integrated with Office 2000, and uses a Toshiba Software Modem. On another desktop WinXP Home it uses an HSP56 MicroModem. Outlook is NOT installed on that machine. The BIG problem is on the 6-week old DELL Dimension 4600i, running WinXP and Office 2003. I have uninstalled/reinstalled 3 times, in addition to the original installation. Each time I followed Symantec's manual Uninstall procedure, because it would never complete the 'remove' process, using Window's Add/Remove Software feature. In addition I have performed numerous restores with all the hassle and reinstalling of other programs that that entailed. I have spent the better part of a week uninstalling /reinstalling Windows XP and rebuilding this machine from scratch, including numerous professional programs that form the 'tools of my trade'.
Wished I'd found this site sooner and read all of the comments above regarding this ONCE EXCELLENT program. It is obviously TOTALLY useless in the environment of this new computer.
One seeming culprit were the Office XP speech/handwriting recognition tools. Or at least the error message 'CiceroUIWndFrame not responding, led me to a site that instructed how to disable these tools. Unfortunately I inadvertently removed all of Office 2003 instead, when I was unable to disable these tools, using the Add/Remove 'change' approach. Thus Winfax remained installed, before I re-installed Office 2003. Obviously the order of installation didn't make a difference, because, ONCE AGAIN: I could open and use Outlook 2003 a couple of time. I even could open and send a still pending fax. All of my sent and received faxes, as well as my address book were present. It had taken some massaging to get them gathered up and ieced together from the standby machines.
Now I'm throwing in the towel. I deeply regret the loss of the history files, since they served as my filing cabinet.

Delrina developed a great program and then it got hijacked by Symantec. Version 8.00 was a dream to use. As it has evolved (backward) it has become almost useless. Problem is that if you need to handle a lot of attachments (like me) you need to patiently terminate the program every two or three sheets and restart it in order to produce multiple sheets. If there where a viable alternative I would buy it ASAP.

WinFax PRO used to be THE Fax program to have. Now it's the one Fax program to AVOID! After recieving an error message complaining that Outlook is not the default mail program which halted the installation, I grudging made Outlook the default (I use Eudora...) just so's to install WFP. Stil didn't work...still said Outlook wasn't the default...still didn't create a prgram group, icons, uninstaller...but I have been luckier than most here, in that I was able to uninstall it clean with the Add-Remove Software utility, then flushed the registry with several apps. This is a nightmarish piece of garbage.

"Winfax 10.02 and XP " - Peter T [March 8, 2004] Product Rating: 2/5
I had this crash and like others I ended up on the support phone trying to clean this up. The main problem is that if there are any other programs that are using XP Outlook it will crash. All symantec offer is to uninstall and reinstall. The best part about the program is the ability to easily edit images and remove objects fairly easily. The files it takes up are also large. The back up doesnt work all that well. So make sure you copt the data files.

After a long conversation with Symantec, my machine seems to be in good shape --- you have to uninstall Winfax 10.03 AND Outlook 2003 (and I mean uninstall clean even through the registry files manually) and reinstall Winfax 10.03 first and then Outlook 2003 second. Seems to make them work in harmony....but that solution is not even in Symantec's site.......for what it's worth....

To ensure a complete install, simply change the option to scan "Program files" only." So, as long as you don't have antivirus running in full mode, you can install winfax 10. I am now looking for other fax solutions.
"WinFax Pro" - David Williams [October 13, 2003]
This product simply does not work with Windows XP regardless of the claims made by Symantec! We have over 200 I.T. engineers in our network services and none of us could get the product to work on the network, let alone installing on a stand alone XP box. Symantec has developed some great products in the past but perhaps they should stay away from fax programs.
"WinFax Pro 10.03" - Lynette [October 6, 2003]
I have installed this with the host being a Win 98 machine. Everything seems to be working fine. As for the person that wanted to share phonebooks, how about sharing via Outlook? The 10.03 version does integrate with Outlook very nicely. I haven't seen any problems with 10.03 so far. As long as TCP/IP is installed on all machines (with this day and age, it should be) then You can share WinFax resources with no problem. The client machine is using WinXP. I then installed it at a client site with the host being a WinXP machine and the client being a Win98 machine. Works fine. The cover page designer is pretty slick and the Outlook integration is nice as well.
"WinFax Pro " - M. Turner [October 5, 2003]
I have read the complaints TOO LATE...My company recently bought the horrid product and it's my job to install it & make sure it functions. It crashes the computer often! We downloaded a trial version earlier this year with no problems so that's why they purchased it. I installed it on an XP machine and it worked fine for a couple of days then stopeed responding. Pretty soon, everything on the computer would not respond. I tried to uninstall it and was denied access by the software! I might add this denied access also happened while trying to uninstall the trial version. It's almost impossible to get rid of. So I began to install it on another machine--my boss' order. This ME machine's anti-virus software detected during installation that the software contained the TULU worm. The machine that crashed never detected it. Since I now knew this worm was embedded in the software, I did a search on the other machine and found it. By the way, I used a CD-ROM I purchased directly from Symantec. So, warning to the rest of you--check your systems for this worm and you are going to have one heck of a time trying to get rid of WinFax. Avoid the software, please.
"Worst ever" - Michael Johnson [October 2, 2003]
One of my clients wanted to share faxing modem, address book, and be able to view downloaded faxes from any of 5 locations. I called Winfax pre-sales support. They assured me that it would do all of the above. I loaded the software, put the templates and data directories on the server and shared. Guess what??? it kept crashing. Called Winfax; they want to $29.00 for support on new installation of rather expen$ive software. After much arguing, the tech weenied and gave me free spt. It was worthless, because he didn't tell me that the software doesn't support sharing of database. Lots more time troubleshooting. Several more calls; which i did have to pay for. On one call, techie asks me to check versions. It sez 10.0 on all 5 disks; i used one on each machine. 4 disks were .02, one was .03. Upgraded all the W/S to .03. (Tech sez it's my fault for not checking the software version after installing....give me a break....all out of same box; all new). Still crashing. More calls. Finally I am told that the software does not share data. (4th or 5th call....Techs are obviously as worthless as the software). Not only can you not share data, you can't even look at another user's data. Pretty worthless. I'd spent about 7.5 hrs on this, and I can't charge my client, who is not very happy. Stay away from Winfax
"winfax 10.02" - benhur flores [September 4, 2003]
This version worked well with my xp pro computer, but only after installing a high end internal us robotic modem. for those winfax users that encounterd microsoft word crash after winfax installation, i recommend that you install winfax first before installing microsoft office.
"Winfax Pro 10.0.3" - Gary Bell [September 1, 2003]
We first started with win fax Pro 10.0 but found out shortly after installing it was not compatable with Office Xp (outlook). So we obtained ver. 10.0.3 From Symantec and installed it on all of our machines, and have had no problems since. Except for when someone calls the Fax line from a voice line, winfax pro 10.0.3 does not know how to handle it so it freezes up and excepts no more call, until you reset it. So if you don't constantly monitor it, you could lose potencial orders.
"WinFax Pro Alternatives" - John C. [September 1, 2003]
I have used trial versions of V3 Inc. Call Center, Ring Central Smart Fax and Call Soft but didn't care for the programs or had some sort of problem. I did purchase Impact Fax Pro from Black Ice Software and used that with some success. When receiving a fax from one location, I would often receive only a black line at the top of each page, all other faxes were ok. The other problem I had was that it would stop auto printing faxes, but at least it would keep receiving them.
"WinFax Pro" - Keith Webb [August 20, 2003]
I bought 10.03 to be compat with WinXP but all I get is 'TAPI modem not available' when all the checks inside and outside WinFax state it is there OK. Can anyone suggest a viable alternative they are using ?
"Winfax Pro " - Anthony Downes [August 15, 2003]
Couldn't figure why my machine was crashing. Despite Symantec's claim to the contrary, WinFax Pro does not support XP. As Symantec do not seem to acknowledge the hundreds of complaints you find on the net about this product, I am now very wary of all their claims and products. Any one want my copy of Win Fax Pro!
"Winfax 9.03" - Evan [August 6, 2003]
We had 9.03 installed on the entire network, worked ok, had some connection issues between clients and server but was functional. Then we bought 10.0. I installed it on the server, then a client and as I tried to install on a second client the server glitched out and had other problems... we switched back to 9.03 and it seems to work fine (except for the same connection issues.) Evan
"WinFax Pro 10.02" - Neil Hayes [June 25, 2003]
I'd side with the rest of these comments, if your using an application that uses the SDK side of WinFax Pro and your running on XP, it will probably be a non starter! I had to aquire WinFax Pro 10.03 to have a working SDK again.
So either stay with WinFax Pro 10.00 or skip to WinFax Pro 10.03.
If I was a manager at Symantec..... I'd kick butt.
"Winfax 10.2 ... enter in Email integration info..where does it go?" - Abe [June 23, 2003]
i am sincerely asahmed to have installed this software being that symantec is such a great name in software. Every time i try to setup email notifications it clears all the entries and does not save the informaiton i enter. PATHETIC!
"Disappointing" - Basheer [June 9, 2003]
I have this 10.2 version, It crashed my word 2000 many times. Another problem, if you forward a fax through email, the user cannot view it until you install symantec's fax viewer. Its annoying when you work in a workgroup and email only machines. If it was supported TIFF format, would be fine! Does anyone know other fax software that supports dual modem?!
"Symantec customer svc." - Alan [June 3, 2003]
I have tried a number of times to order fax software from Symantec. Thankfully, I did not succeed. I downloaded their trial program but was unable to get it to work.
"WinFax Pro 10.0 installation on Windows XP Pro" - Vincent [January 24, 2003]
Yes, It is one of the worst software from Symatec. But there are no thing else better than it on the market right now. If you need it badly try to learn how to live with it. The following is how : 1) re-install Windows XP (CLEAN INSTALL - yes is is a pain) 2) install WinFax Pro 10.0 or 10.02 before you install any other software in it.
I have to re-install Windows XP Pro dozen times & finally found out that this is the only way to make WinFax Pro works.
"What a waste of time!" - Kirk Harbauer [January 23, 2003]
I also looked to Winfax Pro for a reliable solution. What a disappointment! I wish I had read these comments before purchasing Winfax Pro. This program needs continuos attention. It just stops receiving faxes or locks up the modem. Needs work and better support!!
"WinFAX Pro 10. & 9...." - Tom VC+ [December 16, 2002]
I'm using XP. I have not been able to install the product and I have not been able to identify any Symantic links that can provide help, unless I spend more money. I'm looking for another FAX Softwear resource.
"WinFAX PRo 10.02" - Herb Bond [December 9, 2002]
Absolutely the worst program that I have ever tried to work with... support is NON-Existant... It worked well with Windows98.... never again...
"Winfax 10.02" - Tim [November 28, 2002]
I have found that this program comprehensively crashes Word 2000 when running on Windows 2000 Pro. Does not seem to me to be a professional release.
"The worst software I have ever used" - Chad [November 1, 2002]
I am an IT Professional with 10 Years Desktop Experience. I have this installed on three of my companies computers. Between those three I have spent nealry 80 hours installing and/or fixing the program. It breaks often for no reason and is an extreme pain to get it to work on users workstations where they do not have local admin rights. I would not sell WinFax to my enemies!
"winfax 10.0" - hamilton [October 22, 2002]
The worst technical support on the planet..
"Doesn't work w/ XP" - Jim Pope [October 14, 2002]
I have used this product for years w/ Windows 95 and 98 without problem. However, after switching to Windows XP, it is just horrible. It locks up the modem (I've tried two different types), won't reliably pick up calls, and support is virtually non-existent. I agree that I don't think they care about the fax software anymore... maybe it's not profitable. Very disappointing!!!
"WINFAX 10.02" - Jim Villani [October 9, 2002]
This program sucks. I have spent over 8 hours with support and they did nothing but waste my time. DONT BUY THIS PROGRAM. IT IS JUNK!!!! October 8, 2002
"winfax pro XP nightmare" - tim [September 23, 2002]
three days, two manual uninstalls and i am still searching for a new fax software program, dont buy it is my receommendation
"Winfax" - Vadim Rapp [September 17, 2002]
Note that contrary to Symantec statement, their winfax 10 does not support windows xp, since it does not support Unicode. In fact, Winfax is no longer supported by Symantec, since the company switched its business to security area and fired nearly all winfax-related personnel. Winfax has numerous bugs that were known for years, but not fixed since the company lost interest to anything not related to security.
